Don’t wait until after the holiday season to de clutter and organize the holiday decorations. You could save a lot of time, money and space if you do it BEFORE the holiday. Certified Professional Organizer & Organizer-Coach, Tiffany Engler, CPO® gives us five reasons why we should de clutter our decorations BEFORE the holiday, how to go about doing it and how to pack up after the celebration.
Why de clutter and organize your Holiday Decorations BEFORE the Holiday?
Most charitable organizations only take holiday decorations during the holiday season because of lack of storage space. If you wait to de clutter your decorations until after the holiday, chances are you will still have to hold on to them for another year until a charity will accept them.
If you donate your holiday decorations before the end of this year you can deduct those items off this year’s taxes. If you wait until after the holiday season, you will have to wait to take those deductions until 2011. Use the following website to track your deductions: http://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/itsdeductible/
Storage containers and holiday organizing supplies go on sale after the holiday. So if you de clutter before the holiday and take note of how many wreaths and ornaments you have then you can go buy the perfect supplies that will nicely store what you are keeping. The wreath organizer pictured here can be purchased at www.organizeit.com
If you de clutter before the holiday it will save you time when you have to put everything away, because you will have scaled down. Plus you will have probably created more storage space so you won’t have to jam as much in the space as you used to.
How many times have you purchased a string of lights or new holiday linens because you weren’t sure if you had any? When you de clutter your decorations before the holiday you will see exactly what you have, which will stop you from buying something “just in case you don’t have it” which will in turn save you money.
How to de clutter BEFORE the Holiday
Just grab a few boxes and set them near you. Unpack one holiday decorations box at a time and start placing your decorations around your home. Every time you come across an item you no longer want, put it in the “donate box” and write down what the item was for tax purposes. Continue to do this until you go through all of your boxes of decorations and then drop off your donations at your favorite charity. The boxes you see pictured here can be purchased at www.uline.com
How to de clutter AFTER the Holiday
Make note of the storage containers you have and see if there are any specialized containers you might need for wreaths, lights, ornaments and so on. Make a checklist of what holiday organizing supplies you will need to keep your decorations clean and in good shape and then go shopping! One way to pack up your decorations is by room. Take all of your decorations in the living room, box them up in your special containers and label the container(s) “Living Room Holiday Decorations.” Now your holiday decorations are organized and safe – ready to bring you joy next year. “Happy Holidays.”
